Baba Ali Yussif Selected As NPP Candidate For Ayawaso East By-Election

Baba Ali Yussif has been officially chosen by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to contest the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election scheduled for March 3, 2026. The party’s Greater Accra Regional Chairman confirmed the decision, emphasising that Yussif was selected after careful consultation with party leaders.

According to party officials, Yussif’s experience within the NPP, his humility and ability to mobilise support were key reasons for his selection. They also highlighted his familiarity with party structures and grassroots work as strengths that will help him campaign effectively within a limited time.

The Ayawaso East parliamentary seat became vacant following the death of the late Member of Parliament, Naser Toure Mahama, in January 2026. Mahama had represented the constituency in Parliament until his passing, which triggered the Electoral Commission’s scheduling of a by-election.

In interviews, Baba Ali Yussif said he is focused on his campaign and downplayed comments from opponents in the race. He stated that a potential contender from the opposition is not a threat to his prospects and that his focus is on engaging voters with his message.

Meanwhile, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is holding its own primary to choose a candidate to contest the by-election. Several aspirants, including family members of the late MP and other local figures, are participating in the NDC process.
