Ghanaian Teenager Dies After Stabbing Outside UK Library, Police Investigate
An 18-year-old Ghanaian man has died after being fatally stabbed during an incident outside the Foleshill Library in Coventry, United Kingdom, in what police describe as a serious assault that has now become a murder investigation.
The victim, identified as Michael Ababio, was stabbed in the early hours of Sunday evening on Broad Street near the prominent local library. West Midlands Police were called to reports of violent disorder at around 9:40 pm and found Ababio with serious stab wounds. He was rushed to hospital but later died from his injuries.
Officers from the force’s homicide unit have since launched a murder inquiry and are urging anyone with information to assist with investigations. A 19-year-old man found nearby with injuries was arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody while detectives continue their enquiries.
Police also followed up on another incident of disorder that occurred about 20 minutes later on nearby Foleshill Road, but they believe that later disturbance is not directly connected to the stabbing. Four people were arrested in relation to that second event, with one individual charged with assault and remanded in custody, and others released on bail.
The tragic death has prompted a heartfelt tribute from Michael’s family, including his twin brother, who described him as his “second half” and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of someone so young and full of promise.
Detective Superintendent Jim Munro said the family is devastated and appealed to witnesses who were around the area at the time to come forward with any information, including mobile phone footage or dashcam recordings, that could help piece together what happened.
Authorities have urged residents and passers-by in Coventry to contact West Midlands Police with any relevant details and are working to reconstruct the events that led to the fatal attack as the community grapples with the shocking loss.
