Government To Procure Two Offshore Patrol Vessels To Strengthen Naval Operations

The government of Ghana has announced that it will acquire two offshore patrol vessels as part of efforts to enhance the operational strength of the Ghana Navy and improve maritime security around the country’s territorial waters and exclusive economic zone.

Deputy Defence Minister Ernest Brogya Genfi revealed that the procurement of the patrol ships is included in the provisions for the 2026 national budget and reflects the government’s commitment to expanding the capabilities of the Ghana Armed Forces at sea.

According to Mr Genfi, the two offshore patrol vessels will be specifically designed for sustained operations at sea, giving the Ghana Navy greater reach for patrols, surveillance and rapid response to maritime threats such as illegal fishing, smuggling and threats to offshore oil and gas infrastructure. Upon delivery, these vessels are expected to significantly boost naval operational efficiency and support longer missions without needing frequent return to base.

The decision to acquire these vessels comes amid ongoing efforts by the government to modernise and strengthen all branches of the country’s security services. The Ghana Navy has previously been reported to be advancing plans for offshore patrol vessels to improve maritime domain protection and safeguard the nation’s waterways.

Officials say the new ships will play a key role in protecting Ghana’s maritime interests, defending economic zones, and supporting national security operations in collaboration with other services. Further details about the timeline for procurement and deployment of the vessels are expected to be released as the programme progresses.
