Broni Ayoni, a talented musician, has shared the unique challenges he faces as an albino in the competitive music industry. In his own words, Broni recounts the harrowing experience of escaping from people attempting to kidnap him, purely due to his albinism. “Even I myself had to deal with fleeing from people chasing me to kidnap me a couple of times. I know how that feels,” he said, recalling incidents from his time in Aflau. He made these revelations in an interview on Hitz Fm 103.9 Accra with Dj Kwaku Slim.
Broni also highlighted how his appearance has affected his career prospects. He pointed out that many industry professionals have told him he doesn’t look “marketable” because of his albinism. Additionally, concerns about the visual impairments often associated with albinism have led to further discrimination. “They say, because of the problems with the eyes of albinos, I wouldn’t be able to perform well. But then I would go for auditions, perform, and they’d see it’s good,” Broni explained.
Another challenge he touched upon is the audition process itself. “Sometimes the CEOs of the company are not really present on the grounds of the audition, and you go there and find one of the judges,” he mentioned. Broni believes this affects his chances, as his performances may not be seen by the decision-makers who matter most.
Despite these barriers, Broni Ayoni continues to push forward, proving his talent and determination. His story is a reminder of the added layers of struggle that come with being different in an already tough industry.
