Ego And Self-Interest Killing Music Groups In Ghana – Bisa Kdei Speaks
Ghanaian highlife star Bisa Kdei has opened up on why many music groups in Ghana struggle to survive, despite often starting on a strong and promising note.
According to the “Mansa” hitmaker, the downfall of most groups is largely driven by ego, lack of unity, and a shift in mindset among members. He explained that many groups begin with a shared vision and strong teamwork, but this unity gradually fades as individuals start prioritising personal success over collective goals.
Bisa Kdei noted that as time goes on, some group members begin to feel they are capable of making it on their own. This belief often leads to a desire to break away and pursue solo careers, weakening the bond that once held the group together.
He further emphasised that the lack of long-term commitment to teamwork is a major issue within the Ghanaian music industry. While the early stages of group formation are usually filled with energy and collaboration, that spirit tends to diminish when individual ambitions take centre stage.
The award-winning musician also highlighted that internal challenges such as mistrust, competition among members, and disagreements over direction can contribute to the collapse of groups. These issues, he suggested, make it difficult for music groups in Ghana to maintain longevity compared to their counterparts in other countries.
Over the years, several successful Ghanaian music groups have split at the peak of their careers, often due to similar internal conflicts and personal differences. This recurring trend continues to raise concerns about the sustainability of group dynamics within the industry.
Bisa Kdei’s remarks have sparked conversations about the need for stronger unity, clear structures, and a shared long-term vision among group members if Ghana is to build lasting and globally competitive music groups.
