The Minority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has given detailed reasons why former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong was able to secure an overwhelming number of votes from delegates in the Effutu constituency during the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries. His comments come amid questions from some party supporters about why the results in Effutu were so decisive.
According to Afenyo-Markin, the strong performance of Kennedy Agyapong in the Effutu results did not happen by accident. He explained that Mr Agyapong’s popularity in the area reflects long years of engagement, support, and tangible contributions to the community. Afenyo-Markin noted that these efforts have helped build strong goodwill for Mr Agyapong among local delegates and party members.
Afenyo-Markin emphasised that the relationship between him and Kennedy Agyapong is rooted in personal friendship and mutual respect, a bond that goes back many years. He also highlighted that Mr Agyapong has supported activities in the Effutu constituency, including donating vehicles for local use. The Minority Leader said that such interventions helped endear Mr Agyapong to people in the area, contributing to his impressive showing at the primaries.
While some party members speculated that Afenyo-Markin may have secretly influenced the outcome to favour his longtime ally, he dismissed those claims. He said his own record of continuous engagement in development projects and support for constituents has also helped shape political sentiments locally.
In addition to explaining the primary results, Afenyo-Markin referred to plans to complete an Information and Communication Technology centre in the area, a project he says was conceived five years ago and is meant to benefit youth and boost digital skills training.
The Effutu constituency, which is represented by Afenyo-Markin in Parliament on the New Patriotic Party ticket, has long been an area where community relationships and political support go hand in hand.
