Why Dr Adomako‑Kissi Wants Dr Ato Forson Removed As Acting Defence Minister

Dr Dickson Adomako‑Kissi, a former Member of Parliament for Anyaa‑Sowutuom, has publicly called on President John Dramani Mahama to relieve Cassiel Ato Baah Forson from his role as acting Minister of Defence. Dr Adomako‑Kissi’s appeal comes amid ongoing concerns about leadership and confidence in the ministry following the death of the previous Defence Minister.

In a statement, the former MP argued that Dr Ato Forson’s performance has not inspired sufficient public trust in his stewardship of the defence portfolio. He said that the Defence Ministry plays a critical role in national security and thus requires a leader who commands broad confidence across political and institutional lines.

Dr Adomako‑Kissi suggested that Dr Ato Forson should be replaced with someone seen as more technically prepared and less politically controversial. He stressed that the appointment of the acting minister should prioritise competence and the morale of the armed forces.

Dr Ato Forson, who is also Ghana’s Minister for Finance and Economic Planning, assumed the acting Defence Minister role after the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the life of the former Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah in 2025. His dual responsibilities have drawn debate about whether one person can effectively manage both critical portfolios.

The call for his removal reflects wider public and political discussions on how best to strengthen leadership at the Defence Ministry and ensure that national security remains robust. President Mahama has not yet responded to Dr Adomako‑Kissi’s request.
