The Office of the Special Prosecutor has reportedly arrested the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board in charge of Finance and Administration, Ato Boateng, as part of an ongoing investigation. The development has drawn public attention due to recent allegations involving possible conflict of interest linked to his previous business associations.
According to reports, the arrest forms part of efforts by investigators to examine claims connected to a company known as Atlas Commodities Limited. The allegations suggested that the company could be linked to Boateng while he was serving in his current public office role. The probe is aimed at determining whether any misconduct or conflict of interest occurred in relation to his position at the cocoa regulator.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor, which is mandated to investigate corruption and corruption related offences involving public officials, has been actively pursuing several high profile investigations in recent years. Authorities have indicated that the agency continues to examine allegations against public officers where there are concerns about abuse of office or improper financial conduct.
Before the arrest, the matter had already attracted public debate after concerns were raised about Boateng’s association with the private cocoa trading company. Some critics argued that the situation could create a conflict between his public duties and private interests.
However, Boateng had earlier denied the allegations and insisted that he had stepped away from the company before assuming his current role. According to statements released in his defence, he resigned as a director of the firm and transferred his shares before taking office, while also declaring his interests as required by law.
