Musicians Union Of Ghana Faces Criticism After Small Funeral Donation For Yaw Sarpong
The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) has been heavily criticised after donating only GH¢500 to the family of the late gospel music legend Yaw Sarpong to help with funeral expenses.
Yaw Sarpong, who passed away on January 20, 2026, at the age of 75, was widely admired for his contributions to gospel music in Ghana over many decades. His death triggered an outpouring of grief from fans, fellow musicians, and community members.
When MUSIGA presented GH¢500 to support the funeral arrangements, some members of the public and figures in the entertainment industry quickly expressed disappointment and frustration. Critics said the amount was too small and did not reflect Sarpong’s significance to Ghana’s music scene. Many expected the union to offer a more meaningful contribution in honour of a veteran whose work influenced generations of gospel musicians.
Social media users also debated the issue, with many calling on music organisations and prominent artists to step up and show greater respect for Sarpong’s legacy. Some argued that more substantial support would have been a fitting tribute to someone who played a major role in shaping the gospel music genre in Ghana.
At the same time, others urged patience and context, noting that funeral arrangements often involve contributions from many individuals, groups, and government supporters. Family members and community leaders are planning various events to celebrate Sarpong’s life and music, with memorial services and tributes expected in the coming weeks.
