Simi Addresses Resurfaced 2012 Post About Young Child And Responds To Backlash

Nigerian singer Simi has publicly responded after an old social media post from 2012 resurfaced and sparked widespread criticism online. The message in question described a four-year-old boy named David showing affection toward her when she worked at her mother’s daycare, and people interpreted the language as inappropriate.

The tweet, shared years before she became widely known for her music, became a topic of debate when it circulated again on social platforms. In the original message, Simi wrote about a young boy who would come close, act as if he wanted to kiss her, and press his head against her thigh while asking if he should “give him a chance.” Many users who saw the resurfaced content felt uncomfortable with the description and criticised her for using language that could be seen as sexualising a child.

In response to the reactions, Simi issued a statement addressing the context of the old post. She explained that at the time she was 23 years old, helping at her mother’s daycare centre, and trying to navigate life experiences while building her music career. She said her posts back then were informal and meant to reflect everyday moments, not to express anything harmful or inappropriate.

Simi stressed that she has consistently spoken out against abuse and that the interpretation of the earlier message as indicative of improper behaviour is inaccurate and unfair. She also noted that her team has begun to remove some older posts, not because they reflect her character, but to protect her family from ongoing stress caused by the situation.

The incident highlights a growing trend on social media where content from many years ago is reevaluated in a very different cultural context today. It has led to discussions about how the intent of older posts should be understood and how public figures are held accountable for what they once shared.
