The Tema Traditional Council has announced a set of new regulations aimed at transforming how funerals and related social events are organised within the Tema Traditional Area.
The directive focuses on reducing excessive spending, promoting discipline, and restoring dignity to funeral ceremonies, which have increasingly become financially burdensome for many families. According to the Council, the growing trend of lavish funerals and expensive social gatherings is placing unnecessary pressure on residents and distracting from the true purpose of mourning.
As part of the new measures, extravagant funerals, naming ceremonies, and similar events that demand high financial commitments have been banned. The decision was taken in consultation with traditional leaders and key stakeholders across the Tema area to ensure a unified approach to addressing the issue.
The Council emphasised that the initiative is not intended to eliminate funerals but to encourage modest, respectful, and culturally meaningful ceremonies. Leaders believe the reforms will help families avoid debt and redirect resources into more productive areas such as education and general welfare.
In addition to the financial concerns, the new rules are also designed to address public nuisance and improve order within communities. Authorities indicated that steps are being considered to designate specific locations for events to ensure proper monitoring and control.
The acting President of the Tema Traditional Council urged residents to cooperate fully with the new directives, stressing that their success depends on public support and adherence. He noted that the changes are necessary to promote social responsibility and long-term development within the community.
The Council further called on all stakeholders, including families, event organisers, and community leaders, to respect the new guidelines and work together to uphold the values of tradition and discipline.
